The four layers of light
Ambient light is the general light that fills a room. In a luxury home it often comes from recessed downlights or cove lighting that washes the ceiling with a soft glow.
Task light helps you see what you are doing: under-cabinet lights over a kitchen counter, sconces beside a vanity, a reading light by a favorite chair.
Accent light draws the eye to the things you love, such as artwork, a stone wall, a bookcase or architectural details.
Decorative light is the jewelry of the room: chandeliers, pendants and sconces chosen as much for how they look as for the light they give.
Why layers make a room feel premium
A room lit from a single source looks flat. Layers create depth, highlight texture and let one room play many roles. Bright layers work for cooking and cleaning, while softer accent and cove lighting turns the same space into a relaxed setting for dinner with friends.
Our Naples experience center is a good example. Cove lighting, recessed downlights and lit shelving work together, and that balance is much of what makes the room feel calm and high end.
Plan lighting during construction
The best time to design lighting is during construction planning, alongside your architect, builder and interior designer. At that stage we can place fixtures exactly where they belong, plan coves and niches, and run the wiring each layer needs before the drywall goes up.
Planning early also lets us place keypads thoughtfully. A well-designed home needs far fewer controls on its walls, and each one is engraved with simple scenes such as Welcome, Dinner and Goodnight.
Bring the layers together with lighting control
Layers are only as good as your ability to use them. Lighting control lets one press set every layer in a room at once, and your smart home app adjusts any light from anywhere. Lights can rise gently in the morning, dim in the evening and follow your routine automatically.
Curious how the controls are wired? Our guide to panelized, wireless and digital lighting control explains the options in plain language.
A simple planning checklist
- Decide how each room should feel in the morning, the evening and late at night.
- Identify the art, stone and architecture you want to highlight.
- Choose decorative fixtures early so the other layers can complement them.
- Plan keypad locations around how you move through the home.
- Include exterior and landscape lighting for arrival, the pool and the garden.
