# Internet backup: plan for the work your business needs

Keep customer calls and essential online work in your continuity plan, with Gamma managing the backup connection, its limits, and a practical test.

A useful internet backup plan starts with the work your business needs to continue during an outage. Customer calls, booking appointments, and accessing important records may take priority over guest Wi-Fi or large downloads.

Gamma designs and manages business networks, and we can build the agreed backup connectivity around those priorities. Our team handles the configuration and testing, explains the limits, and gives your staff a clear route for help during a disruption.

## Decide what must keep working

Lost connectivity can delay a customer response, leave staff waiting, or interrupt work tied to revenue. A business owner can make the first decision by identifying the tasks that deserve priority and the interruption each could tolerate.

Hypothetical planning example: a small office needs to answer calls, check appointments, and send short customer updates during a provider outage. Large file transfers and guest streaming can wait, and the backup plan can be designed around that reduced workload.

Gamma turns those priorities into a technical plan within your [managed IT service](https://www.gammatechservices.com/managed-it/) . We review the connection options, network equipment, application requirements, and support responsibilities with you before choosing the configuration.

| Business priority | What Gamma checks | What your team should expect |
| Customer calls | Calls in both directions and the agreed phone-service behavior during a connection change. | A documented way to resume calls and report a problem. |
| Appointments and customer records | Access to the applications staff actually use over the backup connection. | A clear list of supported essential tasks. |
| Large transfers and guest access | Which traffic should be limited or paused to protect essential work. | Reduced activity where the backup plan requires it. |
| A longer interruption | Connection capacity, data allowances, power needs, and escalation contacts. | Known limits and an agreed next step. |

## Understand how the connection changes

A network gateway directs traffic between your office network and the internet. A compatible gateway can monitor the main connection and switch traffic to a configured backup when the main path becomes unavailable.

The switching process is called failover. Ubiquiti’s [UniFi failover documentation](https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052548713-WAN-Failover-Load-Balancing-and-Port-Remapping-on-UniFi-Gateways) describes connection health checks, backup priority, and the return to the main connection after recovery.

Gamma configures the behavior supported by your equipment and checks the result against your business tasks. The test includes existing calls, application access, and the return to the main connection, so staff know what needs attention at each stage.

A connection test and an application test answer different questions. Gamma checks both whether the backup path becomes available and whether staff can complete the agreed task through it.

## Choose a backup with realistic limits

A second wired connection and a cellular connection deserve different checks. Gamma reviews available services and asks about shared infrastructure, capacity, and the dependencies that could affect both paths.

Cellular backup uses a mobile network, and the signal inside your building needs checking where the equipment will operate. The [FCC’s broadband-map guidance](https://help.bdc.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/articles/13532984820379-What-s-on-the-National-Broadband-Map) explains that its mobile coverage maps describe outdoor or in-vehicle coverage, while actual experience can vary with capacity, terrain, and equipment. Gamma checks the proposed location and practical performance before relying on a coverage map for the decision.

Data allowances also affect the work a backup can support. Ubiquiti’s [cellular-backup guidance](https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/29887153953559-UniFi-5G-and-LTE-Backup-Best-Practices) describes network selection, usage warnings, and data limits; some supported services purchase additional data automatically unless a cap is set.

Gamma checks the selected plan, supported gateway, regional availability, and configuration before proposing equipment. We agree on essential traffic and usage controls with you, including what should happen as a data limit approaches.

## Include power and service availability

The equipment carrying the connection needs power, including the provider equipment, gateway, network switches, and the access points or phones essential to the plan. Gamma reviews that equipment together so the backup-power discussion covers the intended workflow.

An uninterruptible power supply, usually called a UPS, uses stored energy to support connected equipment during a power interruption. [ENERGY STAR’s UPS guidance](https://www.energystar.gov/products/uninterruptible_power_supplies) explains why equipment load and required operating time matter when selecting one. Gamma can size the agreed network protection and explain the runtime assumptions, with longer outages requiring a wider power plan.

The online application also needs to be available for staff to use it. An internet connection, backup power, and [recoverable business data](https://www.gammatechservices.com/blog/microsoft-365-backup-business-recovery/) each address a different dependency, and Gamma plans the response around the actual problem. A cloud-service outage needs its own operating procedure even with working internet at the office.

## Let Gamma run a controlled test

A planned test gives your business a useful record of what works, how long the change takes, and what staff need to do. Gamma agrees on a suitable time and scope with you, carries out the technical change, and checks essential work with the people using it.

The [internet-backup planning sheet](https://www.gammatechservices.com/wp-content/uploads/gamma-blog-review/gamma-2026-11-03-it-internet-backup-r1/media/internet-backup-planning-sheet.pdf) gives you a place to record priorities before that conversation. Keep the completed sheet inside your business and leave credentials, payment details, and customer information out of it.

- Identify the tasks that protect customer commitments and revenue.
- Record how long each task could be interrupted before the business needs another approach.
- Choose staff who can confirm the agreed tasks work during the test.
- Ask Gamma to record the switch, application checks, return to normal service, and any corrective work.
- Agree on the reporting contact and the next review after significant service or equipment changes.

## Put a local team behind the plan

Internet backup needs clear ownership as your applications, staff, and service plans change. Gamma brings the network design, configuration, agreed monitoring, and testing together so the responsibility stays with a team that understands your business.
